Concerning the health care the first thing to know is that all the students coming to Finland should have a valid personal insurance policy from an internationally recognized insurance agency for the whole duration of the stay in Finland (for example European Health Insurance Card).


How does the Finnish Student Health Service (FSHS) works?


First, you need to know that the Finnish Student Health Service is called in Finnish Ylioppilaiden Terveydenhuoltosäätiö (YHTS). It provides health services for university students as medical care, mental health care, dental care, etc.


You can only use the services of YHTS only if you have paid the Student Union membership fee and have a Finnish student card.
You will be required to show your student card at YHTS (if you don’t have your student card yet you can show the receipt of your Student Union membership payment).


Consultation fees for students are very reasonable and services such as consultation with a nurse or a general practitioner are free of charge.
Note that services are limited and only available during the opening hours. (see further information about opening hours)


Another thing to note is that you have to make an appointment in advance for each visit to the Finnish Student Health Service. You can book the appointments from the FSHS service desk. The nurses are available for consultation every morning without an appointment.


Also, if you are not able to keep the appointment remember to cancel it no later than the day before, otherwise you will have to pay for the appointment (additional charge of 15€ will be charged for not cancelled appointments).
